Terroir describes the complex interaction of soil, climate, and topography and its influence on wine composition and sensory properties. A study over five vintages in Germany demonstrated sensory variation among wines made from grapes grown on different bedrock types that was larger than the impact of vintage. Wines made in wine estates were more diverse than those from standardised small-scale winemaking. In conclusion, terroir could be a route for a stronger differentiation of wine styles and function as a value creator.
