Description

Rootstocks offer protection against a range of vineyard challenges, some of which are more specific to Australian conditions. For example, the major root knot nematode in Australian soils is Meloidogyne javanica, whereas in Europe and North America, other species are prevalent. Phylloxera can be an extremely damaging vineyard pest, but in Australia, it is confined to small east coast regions. However, it is imperative that we have rootstocks that are resistant to phylloxera in case of spread. Many Australian vineyard soils are high in potassium and too much potassium can lead to high juice pH and need for greater pH adjustment during winemaking. Also, limited and /or saline irrigation water is a problem in some regions. The presentation will outline how rootstocks can be used to protect against these challenges.
