‘Understanding and measuring soil quality/health in your vineyard’

Dr Ian Porter DPI Victoria, Knoxfield, VIC

Soil health considers the soil as a living entity, encompassing the soil biological component

as well as the physical and chemical components. Ian Porter and Jacky Edwards are

leading a national GWRDC funded project into soil health. This session aims to examine

two sites within the Yarra and discuss soil health issues.

‘Managing salinity in your vineyard’

Dr Mike McCarthy, SARDI, Nuriootpa, SA

Even with wetter seasons in 2010/11 and 2011/12, a number of salinity problems have

been observed throughout the Yarra. This presentation and fieldwalk looks to tour Yering

Station’s, Spring Lane property to examine salinity problems in a patch of Pinot Noir and

discuss practical management options to improve these problems.

‘Update on Entwine and other regional sustainability initiatives’

Dr Mardi Longbottom, AWRI, Adelaide, SA

This presentation discusses the WFA’s future plans with Entwine and how to obtain

accreditation, but also discusses developments in other winegrowing regions such as

McLaren Vale with their ‘Generational Farming’ initiative
